Know Thyself: MBTI or DiSC

Within my practice as an acting coach and consultant, I personally use both the MBTI(R) and the DiSC(R). I was often asked, “Which one is better? ”

The question reveals one common misunderstanding about psychological musical instruments. The fact is, there is no such thing as “the best” mental instrument. As consultants who use psychological instruments our challenge is to choose the “appropriate” psychological device. test mbti

As long as a psychological instrument has recently been subjected to rigorous quality and reliability testing (the only type I will use in practice) it probably has an appropriate use. 

The Oracle of Delphi, centuries ago, advised “Know thyself. ” I would personally add, “Know others too! ” Psychological instruments have been designed to assess just about any psychological or personality dimension you can think about. In addition to the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) and the DiSC Basic, here is a test of other helpful musical instruments:

* Kirton Adaption/Innovation Selection (creativity and problem dealing with styles)

* Change Design Indicator (change styles)

2. Strength Deployment Indicator (conflict styles)

* Campbell Curiosity and Skill Survey (career choices)

* FIRO Aspect B (need for addition, control, and openness)

Almost all of these instruments have valuable appropriate uses.

Discussing go back to the a comparison of the MBTI and the Compact disk. The Myers-Briggs Type Indication (MBTI) is based on the idea of Medical professional. Carl Jung. The Compact disk (originally called the Personal Profile System(R)) is founded on the theory of Dr. Bill Marston. Both of these gentlemen developed their hypotheses during the early 1900s.


Dr. Carl Jung, a psychiatrist, attemptedto identify the basic personality characteristics that differentiate normal people. Jung described three bi-popular dimensions of personality in his work entitled “Psychological Types. ” He mentioned extraversion versus introversion (an individual preference to indulge in the outer world versus a preference to give attention to the inner world).

Jung believed individuals like 1 of 2 “functions” for gathering data: realizing or intuiting. Sensors choose to use the five senses to gather “real” data. Intuitors look past the five senses for patterns and meaning. Devices are likely to be present-oriented, while intuitors tend to be future-oriented.

Jung also assumed individuals also prefer one of two “functions” for processing data and arriving to conclusions: thinking or feeling. Thinkers prefer reason and objectivity, while thoughts prefer personal values and subjectivity. Thinkers and feelers arrive at very different conclusions due to standards they use to evaluate information.

Katharine Briggs and Isabel Myers, a mother-daughter team, worked to operationalize Jung’s theory of three personality dimensions. Briggs and Myers also added a next dimension based on Jung’s ideas. This fourth aspect considers an individual’s inclination for managing the “outer world. inch

An MBTI practicing (after training and passing a documentation exam) can help a persons and team become aware of their own preferences and the preferences of others. With additional training, an MBTI consultant can help an individual understand and manage his or her “dark side. ” The irony of the personality, the very least preferred of Jung’s functions, comes out when the is tried, stressed, or under pressure. These are valuable insights for anyone who desires to be effective.


It is difficult to compare the DiSC to the MBTI because the instruments evaluate different things. While the MBTI measures personality types, the DiSC measures actions in various situations.

Doctor. William Marston, a physical psychologist, studied how an individual perceived him or herself in a situation, the resulting thoughts of the perception, and the likely subsequent behavior. Marston’s model has two critical dimensions:

? the specific situation is perceived as either favorable or undesirable

? the individual perceives him or herself as more or less powerful than the problem

Marston tried to describe how people designed to varying situations by understanding their emotional answers and subsequent behavior. Therefore, the DiSC instrument helps people understand behavior (their own and others) in various situations.
